Guess what has hit the bookshelf? ASBA’s new publication, Pickleball Courts: A Construction & Maintenance Manual.
The manual, written jointly by ASBA and the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA), is currently available in both hard copy and online form.
The 108-page manual details the design, construction and maintenance of courts for pickleball, which is one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., with more than 2.5 million participants, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.
The publication includes chapters on planning a court or facility, building courts, fencing and lighting, accessories and amenities, care and maintenance, and courts and facilities for adaptive/wheelchair pickleball. Throughout the manual are detailed construction drawings. There are also sources for more information and a glossary of terms. It is the first technical construction manual for the sport.
The book was written by a joint editorial board comprised of representatives of both the USAPA and ASBA, including athletes, officials, court contractors, surface manufacturers and suppliers of equipment for pickleball courts. Both ASBA and USAPA are noting the book represents a huge step forward for the sport.
The sport is played on a court that is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide, approximately the dimensions of a badminton court, using a slightly modified tennis net. Pickleball uses a solid paddle and a seamless, perforated plastic ball about the size of a baseball.
Pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, and can be played indoors or outdoors. According to the USAPA, there are more than 17,000 indoor and outdoor pickleball courts in the U.S., at nearly 5,000 sites in all 50 states.
Why? It’s easy to see. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. In fact, the US OPEN Pickleball Championships presented its inaugural event in 2016, and immediately was overwhelmed with interest, spectators, vendors, media attention and more. Expect the 2017 version of the event to be even bigger and better.
The pickleball manual is hotly anticipated to be one of the Association’s most popular publications. The sport’s growth is outpacing that of many other sports – and it is already one of the most well-attended and competitive sports at the National Senior Games level. In fact, its smaller courts and different rules are welcoming in a lot of players with shoulder, hip and other injuries derived from years of bounding across courts for other racquet sports.
